It was incredibly sad to hear the other day about the tragic attack that occurred in central Berlin, Germany last weekend – something that should never have to happen. Thankfully they found and killed the attacker, but for now we should pause to acknowledge the many victims…
I was in Berlin in early June (my first time there) and indeed ended up riding in the same vicinity as the attack, near the Tiergarten. Ever the traffic nerd, I took note of the many cycling facilities around the city, including this one near the iconic Victory Column (aka Siegessäule) roundabout:
I will report in a future post about other cycling features I found around Berlin too. As you can see in the photo, this five-legged roundabout very cleverly has bi-directional cycle paths around all of the edges, with signalised crossings to safely get riders over the (fairly busy) main approach roads.
Here in Christchurch, the only similar signalised crossing example I can think of is by the Frosts / Travis / Anzac roundabout in Burwood – and even that is only for one approach leg. Is it time for us to up our game at a few more sites?
