Should we make the Rolleston Ave / Park Tce pop-up cycleway permanent?

It was a little over three years ago that a temporary cycleway was installed along Rolleston Ave and Park Tce to make room for the refurbishment works happening in the adjacent Canterbury Museum. The new cycleway continued to cause angst amongst several elected members even up to a year ago, but it has certainly proven to be a very handy strategic connection for several people cycling along the western side of the central city.

Fast forward to 2026, and the City Council are now considering whether these temporary changes should become permanent as part of planned future road and footpath renewal works in the area.

At the time of its installation, there were a lot of concerns about increases to traffic congestion due to removing one of the traffic lanes on Park Tce. However, traffic modelling and monitoring reviews found that the changes had limited impact on travel times and vehicle queues. They also showed that cycling numbers increased here following the introduction of the cycleway.
