Biking Activities for March 2018

The traditional national bike month has come and gone; I hope that many of you were clocking up the kms for the Aotearoa Bike Challenge (have you logged all your rides?). Great to see a number of you at last Wednesday’s Go By Bike Breakfast, despite the damp weather. Hopefully March produces some sunnier days for the numerous biking events coming up:

  • Go Cycle Chch have two events coming up tomorrow Sun 4th Mar. Firstly at 9.30am there is a Cycle Skills Session for Adults at the netball courts in Sth Hagley Park. Come and practice your basic cycle skills with other adults who want to improve their cycle skills, without any cars around. Then at 11am there will be a confidence ride around the city centre, starting by the Police kiosk in Cathedral Square. Join our friendly volunteer ride leaders for a leisurely ride around parts of the central city including cycleways, paths and quiet streets.
Brush up on your cycle skills the easy way…
  • For those on campus at Canterbury University next Tue 6th Mar, there will be a special UC Bike Breakfast between 8-10am in Matariki Square. Just bring along your helmet to get a free breakfast and tea/coffee.

{A reminder that next Tue 6th Mar is also Census Day. Traditionally one of the questions has been about how you travelled to work that day; now however it has changed to ask how you usually travel to work (there’s also a similar new question asking how you travel to study). So even if you can’t get on your bike on Tuesday (e.g. I’ll be in Auckland) you can still say that biking is your typical way to get around!}

  • This week around the country it’s Seaweek, an annual celebration of flora/fauna in and around the sea. In Canterbury, Forest & Bird are hosting a Coastal Pathway Bike Ride next Sunday 11th Mar, starting from 11.30am at the Tidal View carpark in Ferrymead. Join in on an easy ride from Ferrymead to Sumner, with a feature talk on estuary birds along the way.
Ride with a sea view…
  • As usual, the folks at RAD Bikes will running their bi-weekly bike repair workshops every Sunday 12-4pm and Wednesday 5.30-8.30pm. If your bike needs a bit of TLC, or you even fancy having a go at making your own bike, come along and visit the team.
  • Good luck to anyone who’s tackling Le Race from Chch to Akaroa on Sat 24th Mar!
  • Finally Lazy Sunday Cycle Chch is planning a “foraging ride” to the Avon red zone on the afternoon of Sun 25th Mar. This will be a family-friendly ride in the traffic-free area of the red zone, with the opportunity to pick up a bit of fruit along the way – more details to come…
Hmm, must be some fruit in here somewhere…

As always, keep up to date with what’s happening via our Events & Activities Calendar, which can always be found at the righthand side of our webpages. Or you can simply bookmark http://beam.to/chch-cycle-calendar.

What will you be up to this month?
