As mentioned the other day, we made our way on Friday evening to the opening of the new Jolene Bar in central Christchurch – a great night it was too. While we were waiting to enter, we saw an interesting surprise appearance show up…
I know we saw plenty of horses on the streets when we were in Vienna and a few other European cities, but it certainly seems to be a rarity to see them in urban New Zealand, even more so on a separated cycleway (ironically we’ve just been completing some Auckland Transport guidelines on rural provision for active modes, including equestrian paths and crossings). I imagine this cyclist wasn’t the only one a bit surprised to see them here (and I have no idea how/if he managed to negotiate his way around them…).

I occasionally see the police on horses while out on a ride in Sydney. They feel like an anachronism to me but I’m no expert.
A few weeks ago while cycle touring in northern Thailand I had to overtake an elephant and mahout. I was lining up a slow overtake and photo of something unique for me and then a stupid dog decided I was a threat and charged out its property and started chasing, so here was me sprinting full gas uphill worried I was either going to get bitten by the dog or the elephant would react and chaos would ensue. Thankfully the elephant didn’t blink an eye and I had more endurance than dog.
