While in Europe, we managed to spend a couple of (stupidly hot…) nights in Zürich, Switzerland. I was last there in mid-2015, as reported in this previous blogpost. Not much has changed in terms of fairly good cycling networks, on and off-road, although there were a few road sections where we had to contend with busy adjacent motor traffic.
We used some Lime Bikes to get around and explore much of the city. Often this was on fairly quiet back streets or routes with cycle lanes or paths. One of the other features we came across often were streets like this:

As with many European cities, Zürich makes fairly good use of contra-flow cycleways. It helps to provide two-way connectivity for people cycling, while limiting motor traffic access. Back here in Christchurch, I can think of one nice treatment in town along High St, two-way pathways for parts of Ferry Rd and St Asaph St, and I have even suggested the potential creation of one along part of Worcester Boulevard. It would certainly be nice to introduce further on-street examples around the city (we already have national guidance on the topic).
Would you like to see more contra-flow cycleways here in Christchurch?
