As mentioned the other day, a bit of work has been happening through the middle of South Hagley Park to improve the shared pathway there. Yesterday evening, I got the chance to check it out for the first time…

The improvements start west of the Addington Brook (which has also been having its own improvements made too). The first thing you’ll notice is that the new pathway takes a new direction from the old route, veering further north.

The old pathway (which was certainly rather narrow and a bit bumpy in places) is no more and presumably will be grassed over.

The new pathway, which appears to be about 3-4m wide, heads north to run alongside the row of trees subdividing the playing areas.

The route then runs around the north side of the toilet block at the western side of the park.

Finally the new pathway rejoins the western side pathways and the road crossing connection further on towards the South Express cycleway.

It’s great to see this significant improvement over what used to be there before. Overall, the network of pathways across Hagley Park are getting progressively better for shared use by people walking and biking.
Have you tried the new South Hagley Park path yet?

Great to see this, bit of a surprise as well, would be good if we got more of a heads up for these cycling improving projects, but still a nice surprise to see this construction happening Good work (presumably the parks team)
This is great.
Great news, look forward to having a blat when I’m next heading in that direction.
I had an accident there years ago when I moved my bike onto the frost-covered grass to go around other people. I injured my legs and knees. Having been a cyclist for 12 years, I never understood why that path remained in such poor condition. When I saw the new work, I couldn’t believe it! I was so excited that I made a video and shared it on social media. How wonderful! Congratulations to everyone — great job, and thank you.
