How do we make the new Christchurch cycle-friendly? Fri 14th Sep

An interesting opportunity coming up to see some cycling inspiration both close to home and from around the world: To wrap up the University of Canterbury’s 2012 Eco Week  activities there will be a “double feature” on campus next Friday 14th evening for everyone interested.

Dr Glen Koorey from the Dept of Civil & Natural Resources Engineering will kick things off with a visual showcase and discussion about the opportunities that the Canterbury earthquakes have created for cycling in Christchurch. What lessons can we learn from overseas? What have people said that they want and how are the authorities responding? Hear how we can change our city into a cycle-friendly one.

Is this the vision you have for cycling in Chch? Or are there other options? (c/ draft Chch Trpt Plan)

After that, you’ll be treated to a very inspiring short (40 min) movie “With My Own Two Wheels”, which shows how the humble bicycle has transformed the lives of a number of people around the globe. It’s quite a world away from the discussions we’re having here in Christchurch, and demonstrates the broad reach of biking across all cultures.

These two presentations will be showing on the C Block Lawn from 6.30pm, so bring along a blanket or seat and perhaps a picnic (we’ll move inside if the weather isn’t flash). It’s free – see you there!

And here’s a Facebook event link for those inclined…

P.S: don’t forget about the other great cycling events during Eco Week, including Cycle Runway and the “What If Wednesday” seminar

  1. I LOVE this city and its potential as a future ‘cycle city’ is mind boggling… I have just been in contact with City Council about getting permission for a monthly bike lovers ‘jam’…cyclists of every size shape sex and genre to meet up in fancy dress and whatever else they so desire …music, food etc…. it will be amazing and i am so EXCITED To make this happen… any contacts in big wig departments etc would be fantastic- please pass on to me at deboer.jess@gmail.com. I will certainly be getting in touch with the UC sustainability team- you guys did a fantastic job this week- so brill.

    watch this space!
