Events in May: Spokes AGM and Big Bike Film Nights

As we head into May, there are a few cycling events of note coming up (check out our Events Calendar for more of them). Let’s start with this info from Spokes Canterbury:

Announcing our SPOKES 2026 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (AGM)

Tue 26th May, starting at 5.45pm in the Spark Place (Auaha Hīhī) mtg room, ground floor of Tūranga (doors open from 5.30pm)

Guest speaker: Tim Hughes

(Treasurer report located in the Agenda/Minutes)

Main agenda points:

  • Election of officers and committee
    • We are really looking to increasing the size of our committee so please contact secretary@spokes.org.nz if you would be interested. The more people we have, the less workload everyone has, and burnout is something we would like to avoid.
  • Treasurer’s Report
  • Chairs Report
  • Committee recommendations
    • That the Spokes Canterbury membership payment structure be changed from a flat $10 fee with subsequent $5 discount for holders of a relevant discount card (eg student, gold, community service card) to a three-tiered structure with recommended but not required levels of membership payment and that the structure be based on the following:
      • Unwaged $0
      • Waged $10
      • Keen Supporter $10 + optional donation
    • That we create a new role called ‘Membership secretary’ to manage Spokes membership.
    • That we create a new role called ‘Bike Valet Coordinator’ to manage Spokes Bike Valet activities.
    • That we increase the size of the committee to better spread to load of tasks among more people, and that all roles should ideally have a back-up person.
  • Setting the membership fee

If you would like to join Spokes, please do so at the following link.

    • All members who have paid their financial contribution as of the date of the meeting can vote in the AGM.

As if that wasn’t enough, the end of May also sees the return once more of the Big Bike Film Night, with four sessions here in Christchurch – but two (Thu 21 May and Sun 24 May) have already sold out, so get in quick to grab your tickets for Fri 22 May and Tue 9 Jun!

Will you attend the Spokes AGM or Big Bike Film Nights?
