Bikes are back on Buses!

You’ll recall how late last year, there was a night-time ban on allowing bikes being carried on public buses, which then turned into an all-time ban. Well, finally after several months of discussions and testing, Metro Christchurch buses are now allowed to take bikes again during day-time hours!

Yay, they’re back… (c/ MetroInfo)

As we head into shorter days over winter, arguably this might be somewhat pointless for some people who start their day early or finish late. Note though, that the #8 (Port to Port) buses have been deemed OK to operate with bikes on racks at all hours, providing at least limited relief to some people. And hopefully it won’t be too much longer before the restriction is removed entirely.

Are you happy to see the bike rack restriction reduced?

    1. Very pleased to have the security blanket of being able to put my bike back on buses (usually because of weather turning foul, or bike or health issue). But I agree that the time taken was overly long and still want night-time restrictions lifted ASAP (please).

    1. I noticed today on my trip home that there was a spotlight bar that had been put on the front of the bike rack. It turned on when the rack was down somewhere along the way home, and off when I put it back up. I think that’s going to be what they install on the bike racks with the headlight issue. Probably mostly paperwork that caused this to take so long though, and probably mostly on the NZTA side.

  1. Can anybody tell me what the new, central lights on bike racks are for? At present they are only on during the day – when it’s light anyway.

  2. Yay, the use of bus bike racks in Canterbury will now be available full-time (day and night) from Mon 12th May!
