Photo of the Day: Boatshed Bridge cycle count (maybe…)

The cycle display counter next to the Antigua St Boatshed Bridge is arguably the busiest cycling point in the whole city. In 2024, we even celebrated over half a million people cycling across it within the year. On the last day of 2025, I was biking around and decided to capture a pic while I was there:

How many people rode here in 2025?

If you zoom in on the pic, you’ll see that (as of 3pm on Dec 31st at least) apparently about 432,000 people had cycled past this point during 2025. That might seem down a bit on the previous year, but it comes with a couple of caveats:

  • Firstly you will recall that some upgrades were undertaken in the middle of the year to widen this route and avoid the rather cramped nature of the previous corridor. You can see from the photo above how much it has improved the available space here. But that also meant that the counter was out of action for a while when it was shifted further over (indeed, there were 10 days when no count data was recorded). In comparison to the time periods either side of the construction period, the difference in total numbers seemed to be roughly about 20,000 riders.
  • Secondly, I suspect that the display counter is not actually telling us the true story. When I look at the count data from CCC’s SmartView site, it says that the actual cycle numbers across the whole year were in fact more than 493,000 riders.

The upshot of all that is that, without the construction works in the middle, we probably would have seen more than half a million riders again crossing here during the year – certainly a good sign of the cycling demand in the city…

Did you ride across the Boatshed Bridge last year?

  1. That’s interesting to read . Today Wednesday Wheelies ( route # 135 – 11 people – 11am ) rode through. The count displayed on approach was 551. I was first to go past the counter itself , followed quickly by three others. Looking back, the counter hadn’t changed from 551. I could see a bit further on, after approx 10 had ridden through that it as showing 556.

    Calibration time perhaps ?

  2. I’ve noticed whenever I cross it that it doesn’t update for a short time after.

I have wondered whether some software sends an update back to a central hub and then updates, rather than the other way around.
