The days might be getting a little shorter and cooler, but that doesn’t mean the cycling-related activities are dwindling – in fact, quite the opposite! Here’s a summary of what is coming up over the next month or so (remember, you can also check out details on our Cycling Activities Calendar):
- A regular feature every year is the Big Bike Film Night series of short cycling films from here and all over the globe. It speaks to the popularity of the event that this year Christchurch will host four separate screenings! So get in quick to book your tickets on either Thu 22nd May (6.30pm), Fri 23rd May (7pm), Sun 25th May (3pm) or Thu 5th June (6.30pm).

It’s also that time of year when local cycling advocacy group Spokes Canterbury have their Annual General Meeting. This year, the AGM will be held at Spark Place on the ground floor of Tūranga library on Mon 26th May from 6-8pm (doors open 5.45). As well as the usual formalities and some refreshments, this year’s guest speaker is former City Councillor and long-time cycling champion Mike Davidson. All those interested in helping to make Ōtautahi Christchurch a better place for biking are very welcome to come along!
- If you need an excuse to get out on your treadly over the coming weeks, did you know that Tue 3rd June is World Bicycle Day…?
- The Styx Living Laboratory Trust do some great mahi raising awareness and understanding of the Pūharakekenui (Styx) River catchment and its environs including its ecology, drainage, landscape, culture, heritage and recreation values. Part of that work involves regular plantings along the various streams in the area and, for those who like to combine that with a bike ride, why don’t you make your way up the Northern Arterial Cycleway on Sat 14th June to join the Trust in some native plantings near the Ford Road underpass, any time between 9am – 2pm.
- We then reach the shortest day of the year on Sat 21st June (Matariki weekend), which means of course that it’s time for another Winter Solstice Bike Ride. You know the drill: grab your friends and family, bling your bikes up with all manner of lights and decorations, meet up at the Armagh St entrance to North Hagley Park between 5.00-5.30pm and then head away for a cruisy ride around the park!

As if those activities weren’t enough, don’t forget that local community bike workshop RAD Bikes continues to have regular drop-in sessions, club nights, kids’ fix-up days, and beginners’ workshops – check out their calendar here!
- And who knows, we might also see another morning or evening social outing organised by the Urban Cyclist Social Club – it’s been a while since the last one…
What will you be getting up to in the next month or two?
