If you’re looking for another opportunity to connect with other people who bike in Ōtautahi Christchurch, then the Urban Cyclist Social Club might be for you!
Started just a month ago by Aussie/Slovakian duo Samantha Chapman-Bielik (aka UrbanCyche) and husband Peter Bielik, this Facebook group is for anyone who likes to combine bike commuting with a morning caffeine hit or an afternoon pint or vino. Their mission is to inspire people to ride a bike – for commuting to work, fun, and fitness. You don’t have to be a cycling expert or pedal in on a fancy bike – if you like biking, then request to join the group!
In 2025, the aim is to host two events per month for people who ride to and from work or out and about:
- Coffee Commute for Urban Cyclists: Stop off for a coffee and chat on your ride to work, school, or errands run.
- Pint Commute for Urban Cyclists: Drop by on your way home for a beer or wine (or even something tamer…) and yarn.
The first event was already held recently after work at Pomeroys Tavern; probably around 20 people showed up to grab a drink and chat about… whatever, really: what work people do, what they’re studying, where you’ve travelled lately, the latest news making the headlines – heck, even cycling stuff!
The next catch-up will be a morning one, held on this Wednesday 29th January from 7:30am to 8:15-8:30am. The choice of venue is always done by vote on the Facebook group page; currently it’s looking like being at Allpress Espresso on Montreal St in Sydenham. So, if you’d like to grab a cuppa before the start of your day, feel free to come along!
