You could always use a Spark Bike while riding around town: http://cyclingchristchurch.co.nz/2015/08/12/spark-bikes-bikeshare-now-in-central-christchurch/

I have noticed a heap more people biking around town, especially in the CBD. There will be a heap more when the link to the Southern Motorway is finished and the Armagh-Matai pathway is widened.

The North-South pathway in Hagley Park along Deans Ave desperately needs widening, and could link many different crossings together (Matai, Blenheim Rd, Grove Rd...)

Also, I was wondering whether the CCC is still planning on fixing the rail crossing alignment- I wish they'd get on with it!

As somebody who lives overseas and returns each Christmas, the number of people I see cycling in Christchurch has jumped noticeably each time I've returned in the last three or four years.

This time my highlights were:
 * Seeing the shared paths between Prebbleton and Lincoln etc for the first time. They are basic but do the job. A family with small children was using them---something that would have been impossible before.
 * The new cycling provision around the CBD. I think it will be a great asset once more people are working and shopping in the CBD area.

My only problem is that I don't have a bike in Christchurch to get out and ride! (And the nonsense going on in Sydney: http://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2015/dec/21/nsw-cyclists-must-carry-id-and-will-face-same-fines-as-drivers-under-new-laws)
