From Hornby there is painted cycleway on SH1 until turning off at Ryans Road, which tends to be pretty quiet. then Pound Road which at least has decent shoulders.
If coming from North Christchurch or Kaiapoi it is easy to get onto Templars Island Trail at the motorway bridge and then it is off road all the way to McLeans.

I’ll look out for the gate entry to get off the road and use the connecting trails to get to Templars and McLeans now.
