Yet another reason I do not support The Press financially. I'm happy to support other local media with subscriptions - one's that take the time to provide information (often with refs) and balance. I'm not looking for an echo chamber, just trying to understand the world around me.
Oh, and since this is cycling blog, I often use cycleways and have got the the point of taking-them-for-granted. I would have thought that was the point after all.

I still look at maps and think how taking out one or two houses would make the whole area so much better for people walking.

What is sadder is the knowledge that new subdivisions are being built with out these short cuts being built in from the beginning. One near me adds an extra km on the distance to the local primary school. Hopefully when stage 2 is completed there will be a shorter route for future residents to get to the school.

Yes, fortunately balance and reason won on that day. Other days since have not been quite so lucky.

A good reminder LennyBoy and Robert.

Yes, we have come a long way over the last ten or so years. However I'm concerned for the cycle network completion given the current political influences with their self-interest perspective.

The logic of the recent Park Terrace submissions opposing the cycle lane were very revealing. It seemed that balance and reason won in the end.

A good story that helps to remember just how far we’ve come in nearly 7 years. Also how the number of years could have been reduced ( and dollars spent) if it weren’t for these early examples of sensational reporting. Add in the opportunism shown by some who get to make decisions to strengthen their personal support base, rather than see the bigger picture, which add to the struggle. It does feel now that the media has by and large moved closer to a more balanced and centrist position when it comes to reporting on infrastructure for riding a bike. Let’s hope our elected members can do the same.
