I’ve just come back from Japan where there is, wait for it. NO OFF STREET PARKING.
None
Nada
NOTHING
Not during the day, not at certain times. None.

If you want to buy a car you have to prove you have a place to park it either on your property or at a car parking garage. And not only that, an officer has to come inspect it just to make sure.

Also the massive numbers of Kei cars (pronounced K car) which are cars limited in maximum volume and engine size which then receive tax benefits, other cost savings and in some rural area are exempt from having to prove they have a off street car parking space.

I’d love to see more of these cars becoming more popular in NZ, especially for in city travel and the light truck versions for businesses. It felt so much safer in japan walking and cycling when most of the cars passing you are these small city cars not massive ford trucks.

I keep an eye on the local FB group, and in between the heartwarming giveaways of surplus goods and the curtain twitching petty crime warnings, people talk about neighbourhood changes. Constant theme of late is: all these new townhouses are going up and there aren't enough carparks and there isn't enough room for everyone to park on the street.

On the one hand, I'm thinking cool, the market can sort this out: if people really value offstreet car parks they will pay for the land. But on the other: the transition is painful, and the biggest thing I see is the bus network isn't frequent enough or going to enough places for many people. I wish there was more joined up thinking between the PT folks and the land use folks...
