On frosty days I tuck the fingers of my gloves in the waist band of my trousers before leaving the house (ie most of the glove is inside the pants). They are toasty warm after less than 5 minutes! Apparently this is an old motorbikers trick.

I don't mind the cold - two layers of gloves, shoe covers, thermal leggings and a neck buff/cycling cap under helmet work fine down to where the road gets icy. At that point I get a lot slower.

What gets me is the cold rain, like today. Waterproof clothes don't exist when they seal you in and your sweat doesn't come out, leaving you to parboil inside a plastic bag. Hooray for hot showers and spare clothes at work!

I used to wear gumboots for my short rain commute, that worked surprisingly well tucked into waterproof pants but were a little slipperier on the pedals.

I prefer to ride with a full night-time array of lights when its wet during the day - some drivers seem to not cope very well and need all the help they can get.
