I’ve still got a recumbent bike that used to belong to Dirk.

He’d sold it years before as a complete bike, and I bought a bare frame on trademe from the West Coast. We never figured out where it had gone in the intervening years.

It was a running joke for me to show him “baby photos” of whatever I’d updated/added to the bike, from a proper M5 seat (thanks Simon!) to headrest, night lighting for the dark run home in winter, and so on.

Dirk was a good man and I loved his passion for cycling. We need more like him.

Dirk was a passionate and effective advocate for a better, fairer world. He gave generously to Spokes and CAN in our efforts to make New Zealand a better place for people of all ages and abilities to ride bikes.
I will continue to be inspired by Dirk.
