9 years on since this post, but still I wish I there was some progress on this proposal.
Great insights on how the tunnel could boost local business! At 3D Print Christchurch®, we’ve been prototyping 1:200 scale models of urban infrastructure for developer presentations. A 3D-printed model of the Lyttelton Tunnel entrance could help planners fine-tune cyclist lane widths and sightlines before construction.

Your options are :

Ride over Evans pass through Sumner (lowest height at ~200m, newest road)
Ride up Bridle Path (horrendously steep, though I know a guy who does this on his ebike after crossing on the ferry)
Ride up Dyers Pass (330m, more work, busier traffic)
Ride around to Gebbes pass (very out of the way)
Take the bus through the tunnel, each can take through two bikes on the front rack. Could get off at various points on the bus route or go through to the exchange.

What did you end up doing ?

Sadly Jane – unless you wish to ride over the hill or pop your bike on the back of the car, the bus is the other only way to get you and your bike from Lyttelton to the City.

We are moving to Lyttelton and want to cycle to work in Christchurch. Is it possible to cycle through the tunnel? Or is there a train service that take bicycles? I assume there must be but can’t find any information on it.
We’re not local so no nothing!

I’ve spoken to a number of the bar and restaurant owners and they are absolutely for it. I’m sure it would be massive boost for the Lyttelton commerce.

In reply to Ethan. No footpaths, or just on one side of the road, seems to be a feature of new sub divisions. Certainly this is the case in Rolleston and West Melton. I guess it makes the property appear bigger?
