Ok here is a random thought about shared pathways. I watched that program the other week about cycling in the UK and saw the part where the pedestrian turned into the path of the cyclist, which is a common thing with pedestrians, you only need to walk though a shopping mall at slightly faster than average pace with a child in a buggy to experience it.
If you are walking on the open road you are told to walk on the right hand side of the road, so you can jump out of the way of oncoming cars as you can seem them coming. Why don’t we do that on shared cycle/walking paths? It would give the pedestrians some time to react to faster moving traffic, especially as they can’t hear you coming as most pedestrians seem to be “iPod zombies”.

The markings, if they work, will be a great improvement to shared pathways. If they could be put on all the others already in use wide enough to take them (I am thinking, since I use this, the route along side Rolleston Avenue to Hagley park, and in the park would be a great placeto start) it may reduce (preferably stop) the need to bike (or step) off the paths.
