Yes. Finally! I have taken part in these in Bogota, Quito (Ecuador) and Mexico City. They are a day not just for cyclists but for families, and groups of friends to hang out on their bikes. Mexico City had a particularly popular event mainly due to the fact they have the ecobici bike share scheme where citizens can hire/rent bikes for practically no cost so participation does not require a substantial initial outlay and many poorer families still get out on their bikes on Sundays on the most beautiful avenue in the city.

At the Canterbury Active Transport Forum yesterday, a notice on the overhead projector screen showed that a Ciclovia is planned for Sunday 14th July, 10am – 4pm. Not sure how official this is but having all the logos down the left side (CCC, etc) made it look official.

Critical mass style rides may be the best way to start, (whilst critical mass rides can be quite millitant, they dont have to be, and its an easier event to organise) then move to gaining wider support from Council, Police etc once a public profile has been built. Depends on your timeframe i spose.

we all must make this happen. apart from the festival of cycling which is racing focused – chch needs a bike fest which encourages cycling in a non competitive fun way, bringing cycling to the main stream, non lycra! check out the melbourne treadlie bikefest market online, maybe we could organize one for 2015 or sooner
