					<description><![CDATA[The mayor is looking for political cover on cycleways so he puts it up to a defacto referendum. If enough people scream no he can point to that and still claim to be a cycle supporter. If they vote yes he can point to that and claim a mandate. Not great leadership, no educational component to explain why cycling makes sense, but the political considerations add up; so good enough. 

NB: no referendum on the stadium, or the convention centre, or the seizing of inner city land at below market prices. The political will to work for what is right and fair, to lead the city into a future characterised by community empowerment and facing up to the real needs people want addressed is lacking. 

Local elections are coming up and we will need worthy candidates and an electorate smart enough not to be fooled, again.]]></description>
