A big YES to a public bike hire system - but Stephanie is right that we need more bike racks; more and better bike racks. I have recently been visiting a family member at The Princess Margaret Hospital, with bike racks conveniently near the main entrance. They are fine when only a few cyclists leave their cycles there but when all spaces are used to get my bike outI have to lift the cycle on the left with one hand, the cycle on the right with the other and jerk my cycle out with my foot, trusting that none of the brake or computer cables get tangled. A bit more space between cycles would solve this problem.

Great idea which I fully support, however where compulsory helmet rules have been in place these schemes have always struggled. The whole idea behind the scheme is to give people the freedom to cycle when and where they want. Having to carry or find a helmet removes the spontaneity from the scheme and put a lot of users off.

Yes to the public bike system, for tourists and locals alike.
I was in the CBD today and it was very difficult to find any cycleracks! We need numerous convienient bike racks so it's easy to leave a bike somewhere safe. I had to seek out street light or power poles to padlock my bike to. Other cyclists said they found lack of cycleracks in Christchurch CBD frustrating - and unwelcoming. The only cyclerack area was outside the Tuam Street library, great if you want to be on that side of town. Otherwise where are they?

I definitely think public bikes will have a great future in Christchurch. Christchurch is flat and has a relatively dry climate. It would also fit perfectly in in the City of Cycles concept. I am sure tourists will love to cycle along the recently announced Coastal Walk or along the Avon River to the Ocean. But at this stage we do not have the infrastructure for this so Robert Henderson is right to focus on the large organisations first. I hope it is going to take off!!

But we need to have the infrstructure first to persuade tourist to go for a ride.
