Photo of the Day: Quarryman’s Trail final link open

We previously showed you progress on other bits of the Quarryman’s Trail cycleway from town out towards Halswell. A lot of it has actually been complete for a while, particularly the first section along Antigua and Strickland Streets, which is already getting well used. But the key missing link has been the off-road path between Roker St and Barrington St.

As you may recall, this was the “controversial” section that required demolition of a couple of houses to create the link. More recently, wet weather and poor ground delayed the completion. But now at last, it’s open for business:

Crossing Barrington St, looking towards the new pathway to Roker St

Completion of this link allows someone to ride all the way from town to Hoon Hay on separated cycleways or quiet streets, via Spreydon and Somerfield. We’ll give you a blow-by-blow overview of what it’s like in the near future. But feel free to try it out now!

Have you ridden the complete Quarryman’s Trail yet? What did you think?

  1. And yet someone in “The Press” letters on Monday has a complaint that the Council need to improve the City scape. Give me Strength!!!!

  2. As soon as I read “final link” I thought the whole cycleway was complete and hopped onto my bike to try it out. Bummer! Sparks Road is still the same horrible ride it’s always been with cars driving past you way too fast and a very narrow shoulder. Really looking forward to this last section to be constructed as the bit between Strickland Street and Victors Road is very pleasant.
I just don’t understand why they use so much broken glass to make the green road marking (especially on Antigua and Strickland Streets). I’ve had countless punctures because of that 🙁

    1. Sorry about the misunderstanding! Give it another year and we might be celebrating the “final final” link… Crushed glass is generally fine in road surfacing so long as it’s polished properly to remove angular points. But I gather that there have been some quality problems with the latest batch here.
