Biking Activities for May 2017

It’s starting to get a bit chillier out there again, but nice to still see some sunny weather in Christchurch most of the time (I’ve probably jinxed it now…). As we move into May, there continue to be a number of interesting biking activities both inside and outside to keep everyone occupied:

  • Mothers Day (Sun 14th May) sees two options to celebrate the Mums in our lives. Firstly, Frocks on Bikes are offering a Street Art Ride,  showcasing some of the new and old favourites of street art in the City. Meet at the corner of Gloucester and New Regent Sts at 11am, finishing nearby for coffee and refreshments.

Fun rides for Mums and everyone else
  • Also on 14th May from 2pm is the CycloFemme CHCH Ride 2017. This is a celebration ride to honour the past, present, and future of women everywhere. Meet up in town at Action Bicycle Club (Walker St) with the ride heading through Hagley Park and the Uni-Cycle route to Park Ranger Cafe for afternoon tea.
  • Sat 20th May sees the first of two slow rides this month by Go Cycle Chch for people who want to gain more confidence biking. The Fendalton/Merivale Slow Confidence Ride will meet at the corner of Matai St and Mona Vale at 10.30am and will be a short ride on some of the new cycle infrastructure nearby, quieter public roads and parts of Hagley Park, with stops along the way to share tips on how to have a safer and more enjoyable ride. Contact Connie to book a free place.
  • This month is also time for the return to Chch of the Big Bike Film Night. Featuring a collection of short movies that have everything a bike-centric audience could want: action, drama, plenty of humour and even a hint of romance… Tickets are selling fast for the main screening on Fri 26th May from 7.30pm at the Charles Luney Auditorium (St Margaret’s College, Winchester St).
  • But wait, there’s more! This year Big Bike Film Night are also offering a special Cycle Chic film screening on Sun 28th May from 6.30pm (also at the Charles Luney Auditorium). This is a special extra collection of 11 short movies from around the world about the cycling women in our lives. Get your tickets now!
  • In between these two screenings, ICEcycles are back with a Phillipstown Hub Bike Day on Sat 27th May from 1-4pm. This is a gala day of bike-related activities to enjoy at Phillipstown Community Hub (Nursery Rd). Get your bike repaired or maybe even get a newly refurbished bike. There is also a class on how to maintain your bike, focusing on skills such as puncture repair, re-greasing bearings, adjusting gears, changing brake pads etc.

Come and get a bit of repair help and advice from ICEcycles
  • At the Bike Day on May 27th, Go Cycle Chch will also be holding a Phillipstown Slow Confidence Ride for new or returning riders. Come along if you need a bit of help getting your cycling legs, for a short ride around some of the neighbouring cycle-friendly streets and paths.
  • Throughout the month, RAD Bikes will continue to offer their regular twice-weekly open bike workshop hours for people to come and tinker on their bikes, work on making a recycled bike, or get some mechanical advice. Drop in to the RAD Bikes shed (cnr Kilmore/Durham Sts) any Sunday 12-4pm and Wednesday 5.30pm until dark.
  • There are a couple of Annual General Meetings this month that may be of interest. Firstly, local cycling advocacy group Spokes Canterbury’s AGM is on Thu 25th May from 5.30pm at the Quaker Centre (cnr Ferry/Nursery Rds). The formalities will also be combined with a guest speaker and some refreshments; so come along to find out how you can support better cycling in the city. Then on Tue 30th May from 7.30pm, the Chch Coastal Pathway AGM will be held at the Redcliffs Bowling Centre (9 James St). Come and hear about the progress on the pathway, with guest speaker Darren Wright.

Will the Chch Coastal Pathway get your vote for favourite place to ride?
  • Finally, make sure that you have your vote for NZ’s Favourite Places to Ride 2017 – nominations close at the end of May. What’s the best place in NZ where you like to take your bike? Is it in Christchurch or somewhere else? This year there are four separate categories to vote for: Best Urban Ride, NZ Cycle Trail, Off-road/Adventure Ride, and Community Facility. By nominating you also go in the draw to win a share of $1000 worth of vouchers from your favourite bike shop, so get those votes in now!

What will you be up to this month?

    1. Paulo, perhaps donate it to RAD Bikes or ICEcycles (see Bike Maintenance workshops in our menu); they could resurrect it and get it to a good home…
