Time for some more Cycling Events!

The Xmas / New Year break is over for most people and, while the weather is currently miserable, that is expected to improve by the weekend. And so it’s time to start rolling out a few fun cycling events to wet your whistle! Last year, we had a great series of cycling-related activities in Chch over summer and well into autumn; hopefully we can continue to do the same this year, thanks to a number of great volunteer groups out there:

  • Sat 30 Jan: Frocks on Bikes Chch are taking advantage of this Saturday’s Kite Festival to organise a bike ride through the red zone out to New Brighton Beach. It will start 11.30am at Beverley Park in Avonside and wind its way alongside the Avon-Ōtākaro River out to the sea and the kites. This route will take in a few mostly-quiet roads (and potholes!), so some on-road confidence is required.

  • Sun 31 Jan: Last summer, the monthly Lazy Sunday Bike Rides were a great hit, and now they’re back! The first ride for 2016 is this Sunday will start 11am by the Hoon Hay shops (cnr Halswell & Hoon Hay Rds) and follow the off-road pathway around the edge of the Canterbury Agricultural Park to Aidanfield and back, followed by a wee picnic. Don’t like traffic? Lazy Sunday keeps to off-road paths or very quiet streets only. No bike? No worries; Lazy Sunday will have a few bikes available for people to borrow, thanks to Bicycle Ventures. The ride is free, but numbers are limited so you will need to register via Eventbrite. Don’t worry if you miss out, there’ll be another ride at the end of next month, and the next month, and…

  • Wed 10 Feb: National Go by Bike Day is not too far away either. Events are still being finalised, but expect to see some breakfast celebrations for those heading into town in the morning.

Remember, if you want to keep track of what is coming up cycling-wise around Christchurch, just check our handy Events/Activities Calendar (you can find a link on the righthand side of every CiC webpage). There you’ll find brief descriptions and links for where to find out more. Contact us too if you’d like to add some event to the calendar.

Will we see you at a coming event?

  1. I guess Le Race on March 19 might be a bit much for some, but come watch the start along Colombo Street from the square to Dyers Pass Road from 0800.
